PAPER PEOPLE WITH A LITTLE PIECE OF SOUL
Gloria Esbert studied Jewellery and Costume Jewelery at the School of Arts and Crafts in Mahón. There, she had the opportunity to learn all kinds of pictorial and modeling techniques. It was not until a few years later, and almost by chance, when Gloria began to experiment, to play, transform and model figures with newspaper. Gloria says, “Paper is an organic material that ages over time, and this gives the figures a life of their own. I am not looking for smooth or polished surfaces, but rather the imperfection that paper offers. This technique gives the figures a melancholic appeal full of sensitivity.
Human beings are my source of inspiration due to the complexity of their thoughts and emotions. I try to capture small moments of introspection with gestures, colors and shapes that convey some feeling. Some of Gloria’s work can be seen at La Galería Artara (Argos) in Mao. You can ask Gloria to create a family member or friend that you know for a special occasion.
TECHNIQUES: Paper modeling, putty and collage.
Gloria recycles newspapers, magazines and colored paper.

AZULMENORCA
It was during the pandemic and strict lockdown that Clare Beckmann started making bracelets from broken pieces of jewellery that she had in the house. She says “I’ve always been creative and have painted and loved making things, so making jewellery was new to me, but it was also another challenge. It became quite addictive, and I started buying beads and bands and my husband, started helping. It quickly became a joint effort.”
Clare and Jörg soon had quite a collection of necklaces, earrings, and bracelets and realised that it might be a good idea to try to sell online. This was when AzulMenorca was born. “Our knowledge, ideas, and collection kept growing and Jörg mentioned having a shop. At first, I felt rather overwhelmed, and probably a bit old to start a new business. But the idea grew, and we found a good location and opportunity in Es Claustre, the historical building in the centre of Mahon used as an open market with local products.”
AzulMenorca opened in April last year. Clare says ‘It has definitely been overwhelming but in a very positive way. Hearing lots of people’s lovely comments is worth more than anything else to me. It makes me so proud to see what we’ve both accomplished together. We only make jewellery with high quality crystal from Preciosa/Swarovski, natural semi-precious gemstones, ceramic, shell, glass, silver, wood or stainless steel.
Menorca has a long tradition in jewellery making, and we have components made by companies on the island. We’ve cleaned plastic from many beaches on Menorca and avoiding plastic is very important for us. My passion is making pretty things at affordable prices and our beautiful summer handbag collection completes the shop.”
Azulmenorca is open in Es Claustre 10:00-14:00.
